Chapter 12

Aton was waiting in the sword room early as expected. Good thing Kitty woke me up and made sure I had breakfast. I dressed appropriately to avoid arguments with Aton since Ivius wasn’t here to mitigate between us.

We first practiced my stance and then combinations.

“When chopping, you can start with your sword down, aim at your center, bend your elbow, cross, and aim up. You can also cross over your head and chop across. Control your movement and commit to it. Don’t stop halfway. Know where the sharp end is pointing. Don’t forget your stance.”

We did this for several hours without a break until he finally called it a day. “Tomorrow, we should be ready to use our weapons.”

Thank fuck.

I dropped to the floor, face down.

Aton hovered around me, but I ignored him, too tired to care. Then he sat next to me, which was weird, but I continued to ignore him. Until finally, he poked my back.

“What?” I asked sharply.

“Did you want some water?”

“Oh. Thank you.” I flipped onto my back, reached for the water, and quietly sipped it. When he didn’t leave, I asked, “Was there something you needed?” I wasn’t comfortable with the silence around this dude.

“Yes. Did you want to go visit Horace?”

“Who?”

“The one you saved. He’s still recovering, but he’s been asking for you.”

“Oh. Sure.”

He extended his hand, and I glanced at it for a moment, unsure why he was being nice, but I took his offered hand, which he didn’t release, and we walked hand in hand towards the infirmary.

Definitely not comfortable with the silence, so I swung our clasped hands as if we were children playing.

“Have you ridden Pius much?”

“Yes. We hang out a lot. He’s amusing. Do you have a bonded pegasus?”

“Yes. Her name is Naira. She’s swift.”

“Oh yeah. I bet Pius is faster. We should race.”

“You’re on. Let’s go after we visit.”

Okay, I'll tell Pius.

“Can you speak with him long distance?”

I flashed him a smug smile. Pius, Aton bragged that Naira is fast and would like to race after we visit Horace. I bet him you’d be faster, so don’t make me a liar.

Oh, it’s on. No one is faster than me.

That’s what I’m talking about.

See you soon. Let me gather my followers so they can cheer for me.

You do that.

I laughed.

“What’s so funny?” Aton asked.

“Nothing. The animals…” I glanced at Aton. “Some creatures in my life are extremely confident. It’s amusing.” I shrugged.

He watched me but said nothing. I expected him to let go of my hand, especially when we passed other godlings, but he held my hand without care. Typical Aton, he did everything with confidence and credence.

He led me to another part of the infirmary and knocked at a door. “Come in.”

“Hi, Horace. Is this a good time?” Aton asked as he pushed the door open to a small dorm room with a bed and a seating area.

“Yes. Come in. Get comfy.” Horace gestured to the seats.

“Howdy.” I waved.

“Thank you for coming.”

“Horace, this is Betty. Betty, this is Horace,” Aton said as he sat beside me while Horace sat on the bed.
